The Powerhouse is seeking an experienced museum professional to provide vision, direction and executive leadership in the overall planning, development and execution of the museum’s educational and public programs, gallery operations and volunteer efforts.

This position requires the effective development and oversight of goals and programming for serving the educational needs of diverse audiences. The Deputy Director will provide the vision, strategic direction and leadership to ensure that all programs and services in the departments of Education, Public Program and Gallery Operations, and Volunteers successfully address The Powerhouse’s mission and guiding principles, are coordinated and communicated internally and externally, and meet institutional goals and budgets. The Director will simultaneously manage multiple projects at different stages of development. The position involves working with a variety of leaders, outside groups, partners, donors and board members on local, regional and national levels. The incumbent needs to be creative in developing strategic and tactical plans for programming and operations, utilizing the strengths of the Museum as well as understanding audiences for the optimal results. In conjunction with the Executive Director, the Deputy Director formulates strategic plans, policies, priorities, and program objectives to accomplish the long and short-term goals of the museum as well as ensures the development and implementation of innovative programs and other mechanisms to serve key audiences.


  • Directly oversee the Education, Public Programs. Gallery Operations and Volunteer efforts of The Powerhouse
  • Lead strategic planning for departments reporting to this position: programming, multi-year goal setting and in conjunction with the Executive Director, Board and staff
  • Provide management/oversight for floor operations and develop best practices for guest engagement and accessibility
  • Include audience research and current museum practices as part of the development process of all department programs
  • Working with Director of Donor and Community Engagement Director, bring leadership to grant and sponsorship projects for departments
  • Work with the ED and Marketing to support effective external visibility for department programs
  • Lead and articulate priorities, schedules and program implementation and budgeting for reporting departments
  • Represent the museum and programs at public meetings, professional conferences, partnerships
  • Coach and counsel staff and encourage a team-based approach to project planning and implementation, readjusting staff work schedules to meet the Museum’s strategic plan initiatives, priorities and/or changing needs
  • Manage organizational changes as needed in departments reporting to this position
  • Ensure the development and implementation of innovative programs and other mechanisms to serve key audiences
  • Expand digital reach to broaden audiences


  • 5+ years of senior management level museum experience
  • Demonstrated experience in the creation, implementation and assessment of innovative educational and public programming
  • Experience with national education and programmatic funders in the areas of science and technology
  • Executive leadership and strategic planning experience
  • Board relations
  • Knowledge of audience research, program evaluation and current museum practices
  • Experience in effectively leading and managing a multi-disciplined team and overseeing staff
  • Financial acumen, business experience and budget oversight for large departments or institution
  • Ability to multi-task and manage projects on-time and within budget
  • Public speaking and relations at a state and national level
  • Experience in operational planning and oversight, volunteer training/management
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate collaborative relationships with outside groups and individuals at the local, regional and national levels, as well as internally within an organization
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Experience with start-up museum programs and/or significant museum programs reinventions
  • Demonstrated experience with exhibit and media program development preferred
