Pub Science: Friday, Sept. 5
Join Dr. Ryan Haaland, associate professor of physics at Fort Lewis College, for his Pub Science talk, “Sprites: Mysterious Lights in the Mesosphere.” This casual and creative presentation will briefly describe sprites: large-scale, cold plasma phenomena, which give rise to a varied range of visual shapes occurring far above thunderstorm clouds.
Dr. Haaland will discuss how and why they appear and what conditions in the atmosphere produce them. He will also display spectacular imagery that demonstrates characteristics that make sprites such an intriguing phenomena to study and present one of his observation campaigns.
